Quilting the Blues

Hi Everyone, welcome back to my sewing room. I am very happy to say that I have smashed last week’s expectations!

Even though I am very late getting this post written, my quilting has been coming along nicely. On Monday I was too busy quilting and so just forgot to come on here to up date you all. On Tuesday I was just too exhausted to do anything much and so had a rest with my feet up and an early night. Yesterday I had such great intentions of catching up and writing this post, but couldn’t as the internet was down all day, not coming back on until around 11pm! So here I am, Thursday morning, catching up on what should have been done on Monday.

I was hoping to get the centrepiece quilted and then decide what to do in the rest of the blocks, and while the cenrepiece isn’t quite finished I decided to move on to the rest of the quilt while I mull over how to finish off its empty corners. While it didn’t turn out quite as I was expecting, I am fairly happy with the quilting I’ve managed so far in the centrepiece, hopefully I can find the perfect solution to fill in the last little bits of it.

Beyond the centrepiece I have not only decided what to do for most of the rest of the quilt, I’ve actually quilted a fair chunk of it too. My plan for the pink rings all along was to do feathers, which I have now completed. I decided to do the bounce back, or custom, feather as I thought it would look better in the complete rings, even though I much prefer to quilt the basic feather with each plume quilted separately. And while I think I was right to choose the custom feather, I could definitely do with some more practice with it. The plumes aren’t as nicely formed as I’d like, definitely not as nice as my usual basic feathers, however I have also never quilted my feathers in rings before either, only ever up or down, so that added quite a bit more complexity to it as well. Still for a first attempt at rings of custom feathers I think I did alright.

I have now moved on to quilting the large blue areas around the pink rings. I’ve decided on some straight line ruler quilting for this section to provide a bit of contrast with the curves of the centrepiece and the rings of feathers. I’m not too sure yet what I’ll be doing in the little blue four patches or the outer border, but I’ll think about that after I’ve got the big blue bits finished.

Even though half the week is already over, here are my goals for what’s left:

  • Finish quilting the big blue sections

  • Decide on and quilt either the four patches or the outer border (both would be great, but we’ll see how that goes)

Hopefully I have all the quilting and even the binding done by the end of next week, ready to work on my next project!

Till next week,

Keep On Stitching!
