Mandala Quilt Centre

Hello everyone and welcome back!

Although I had planned on writing and posting this yesterday evening, my children apparently had other plans. But that’s ok, because here I am now, catching up.

This last week was quite a productive one in my sewing room, I got my blocks for the pink and blue quilt sewn together into larger blocks as planned. I also figured out what to do for the centrepiece of the quilt. I had hoped to also get the centrepiece finished over the week, and had I gone with one of my pieced options, or even machine applique I would have got it done, but no, I decided to go with the much slower option of hand applique. Why do I do this to myself?

When starting to design applique options for the centre block I was originally planning on a few fairly large flowers that would expand out beyond their border, however those plans somehow morphed into a single mandala design that will be remaining within its border instead. This design took quite a while for me to settle on. First of course I had to draw the different components, which took a few hours to complete, then I had to find the right fabrics for each piece, which took me much longer! It didn’t matter how many different options I tried, nothing was quite right. I finally settled however and am now quite pleased with my centre. I’m now thinking that I’ll incorporate the centre design into the quilt borders as well, using the same background fabric and some matching applique designs. I have so far sewn down the central circle and the nine big blue petals.

Goals for this week:

  • Finish appliquing centrepiece

  • Add a border to the centrepiece

  • Piece all the blocks together, ready to start on the borders next week

Well to get all that done along with all my other daily tasks as a busy Mum to a two year old and a five month old, I had better leave this post here and pick up my needle and thread.

Till next time, Keep On Stitching!
